Issue
Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 creates an _notes folder, even when you have the preference turned off in the Design Notes category of the Site Definition dialog box. Dreamweaver also creates a dwsync.xml file inside the _notes folder. When you run Clean Up in the Design Notes category of the Site Definition, Dreamweaver does not delete the dwsync.xml file or the _notes folder. (Ref. 196185)

Reason
Dreamweaver 8 keeps file synchronization information in the dwsync.xml file which is located in the _notes folder. Although the dwsync.xml file resides in the _notes folder, it is not a Design Note. The Clean Up design notes command only cleans up MNO files.

Solution
If you don't use Dreamweaver's Synchronize feature, you can disable the "Maintain synchronization information" option from the Remote Info category of the advanced view of the Site Definition dialog box. This will delete all of the existing dwsync.xml files and stop the creation of future dwsync.xml files and _notes folders.

Note: Disabling the "Maintain Synchronize Information" option will prevent you from using Dreamweaver's Synchronize functionality.

There are many factors making up the search engine algorithms that decide where a website will be placed in its rankings. But what's the most important commodity to your website that you have 100% control over? The words and the content.

Whereas content has always been of the utmost importance, five or so years ago we were concerned largely with code and page tweaking, as well as off-site optimisation techniques such as link building. In this day and age of social media voting and various other networks that can be levered to drive traffic, the actual content has never been more important.

The importance of good content
With regards to search engine optimisation, a lot is said regarding the importance of links, keywords and title tags. None of these should be ignored when building a website - keyword research should be carried out thoroughly, the title tags unique and optimised for each page, and link building pursued in whichever way you see best fit. But none of this should be carried out at the expense of the actual on-site content.

There's all manner of off-site trickery and quirks that can be employed to increase your natural search engine ranking and drive traffic to your website. If a visitor arrives and finds nothing of any relevant value to what they were searching for, or badly written copy littered with typos and grammatical errors, then they're not going to stick around. Copywriters always stress the acronym 'WIIFM' as being the most important factor when writing sales copy. This means 'What's In It For Me?' and is what any potential customer or visitor to your website will be thinking when they arrive. Therefore, use the homepage to tell them. If you're providing information, let visitors know what they can expect to find and why your website is the place to find it over anybody else's. If you're selling products or services, ensure user are made fully aware of how they'll benefit from them.

The benefits of good content
Good, well written content that's engaging, informative and unique, not only benefits users but also you, the webmaster.

Obviously, if you're providing a useful resource for users, whether through a blog, regularly updated articles, or just the core pages of your website itself, then you'll inevitably develop a base of regularly returning readers. If you're actually selling something through your website then this increases the opportunities for successful conversions.

But as a side-effect of this, and perhaps most importantly with regards to SEO and improving your search engine rankings, there's all the naturally formed links your website will enjoy.

Links are still gold-dust when looking to rank highly in the search engines and the naturally formed link will always remain the bedrock that Google was built on. If you're providing decent, informative content on your web pages, then people will naturally link to it. This can be given a boost by promoting your website around various social networks - the traffic from these sites is notoriously unqualified and for the most part won't lead to a significant rise in conversions, but as a way of attracting links into your website, they're invaluable.

Submitting to all the search engines
Submitting your website to every search engine is an incredibly time-consuming process. There are hundreds and hundreds of them out there - no doubt, you've come across the companies who'll submit your website to 1000 search engines for you.

Search engine professionals know that the vast majority of these search engines have a very low usage rate and will drive hardly any traffic your way. In fact, it's only a handful of search engines that drive the majority of traffic from search engines to websites.

The major search engines
Some of the most important search engines, probably accounting for over 90% of the search engine market, are:

* Google
* Yahoo! (read about Yahoo!'s new search engine)
* Inktomi
* Teoma
* Fast
* AltaVista

Please note that the new MSN search engine will roll out at the end of 2004 and will be very important.

Don't submit to these search engines
“But there's only six of them - why on earth not!?” Well, aside from saving time and a bit of money (some require a submission fee), quite simply there's no need. Allow me to explain...

Search engines crawl the web every few weeks (or months) looking for websites to index. Here's how it works:

* Search engines start at one website with a large number of outbound links (usually a directory)
* They follow every link they come across, indexing each page they arrive at
* Once a page has been indexed they follow all the links from that page
* And so on until there are no more links to follow

Unless today is your very first day on the Internet, you might have heard that inbound links into a website are extremely important in establishing its search engine ranking. If a search engine can't find you by itself through crawling the web, then your website doesn't have any inbound links. If so, you'll never achieve a decent search engine ranking so what's the point in registering?

Getting incoming links quickly
So, how do you get incoming links? Well, this is a vast topic which I won't be discussing now, but if you want to get a few good links quickly then there is a solution: web directories. If your website is listed in the Yahoo! directory (not the same as Yahoo! search) and the Open Directory (which Google uses) all the search engines should find you within two to three months.

There are plenty of other directories you should get listed in too. Global, local and industry-specific directories abound on the Internet. To find them run a search for ‘web directory’ on your favourite search engine. The directories that come up highest in the search rankings will probably generate the most traffic. You can also check these directories of directories:

* Open Directory's directory of web directories
* Search engine colossus
* Best Free Directories
* Internet search engine database
* Business Directory

Another even quicker solution is webmaster forums. Search engines love forums because they include so much fresh content. Most have an area where you're allowed to enter your URL to get feedback from other webmasters. Find some forums, sign up, and get posting!

A quick fix
It can take a couple of months to get listed in some web directories. If you can't wait that long then it might be worth submitting your site into a paid program and "artificially" boosting your rankings. Long term strategy
Search engine optimisation is a long term strategy. You'll be successful if you:

* Structure your pages correctly by positioning your keywords in effective places
* Build a great site with unique content that other websites will want to link to

Register with as many web directories as possible and then concentrate your efforts on these two things. Within a few months you'll start to see success.

When designing Web pages using Photoshop and ImageReady, keep in mind the tools and features that are available in each application.

hotoshop provides tools for creating and manipulating static images for use on the Web. You can divide an image into slices, add links and HTML text, optimize the slices, and save the image as a Web page.

ImageReady is designed for professional Web page layout. You can more easily work with layers as if they were independent objects: selecting, grouping, aligning, and arranging them. In addition, ImageReady includes tools and palettes for advanced Web processing and creating dynamic Web images like animations and rollovers.

The graphics tools and features in Photoshop and ImageReady simplify most Web design tasks:

Page design

In ImageReady, preset document sizes for pages and banners, grids, guidelines, and smart guides simplify page layout. Both Photoshop and ImageReady let you add content to layouts using the text, drawing, and painting tools. In ImageReady, you can arrange and align content using layers, layer sets, and grouped layers. To experiment with different page compositions or to export variations of a page, use the Layer Comps palette. See About layer comps and the Layer Comps palette.

Slices

Rollovers

Animations

For creating simple Web animations, ImageReady provides the Animation palette, giving you the ability to determine, frame by frame, the appearance of an animation that can be exported as an animated GIF or SWF file. You can create animation in conjunction with sets of slices, nested tables, percentage width tables, and remote rollovers, where you mouse over one image and a different image changes.

Export and image optimization

When your page or graphic is ready for final export, the Save For Web dialog in Photoshop and the Optimization palette in ImageReady enables you to precisely determine how the page or graphic should be exported. Additionally, you can export an HTML file with the actual images. This text file instructs a browser how to properly display exported images and rollover effects. (See Setting HTML output options.)

Note: You can preview most Web effects directly in Photoshop or ImageReady. However, the appearance of an image on the Web depends on the operating system, color display system, and browser used to display the image. Be sure to preview images and pages in different browsers, on different operating systems, and with different color bit depths. (See Previewing an image in a browser.) Remote rollovers are best previewed in a browser.
